Looking for a great local day hike? Try Cherry Creek Falls
The double falls drop 25 feet to the pool below. Three miles from the intersection of Kelly Road and 318th lies a little known secret called Cherry Creek Falls. A few weeks ago our family and some friends meandered up there to take a look. We parked at the end of an old logging road, unloaded the kids and the dog and headed off up the road.
This trip starts on a logging road but quickly turns into a trail. Thetrail winds through some scenic hills and along Cherry Creek. There is an abundance of wildlife to be seen including hawks, ducks, cranes and chipmunks.
Thekey to finding the falls is simple. At every fork in the trail go straight. While this may seem counterintuitive, it works for this trail. There is some elevation gain but it is only about 300 feet over the three miles so it is a walk that most people can do.
While the dog was much more eager than the rest of us, it really was a pleasant walk. The scenery was great and the company superb. About one hour into the walk we got to the falls. Theywere beautiful.
The twin waterfalls cascade into a large pool surrounded by towering cedars. This was the perfect location for an impromptu wading party. Despite the low 60 degree weather the kids and the dog both got wet.
As we returned to the cars we all agreed that our time there was entirely too short and we would have to return soon.
So here are my suggestions for your trip. Go on a sunny afternoon, take a lunch, put the kids in something that can get wet, and have a great time
Editor’s note: My wife Laura and I also took this hike a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. We took a video of the waypoints showing you how to find them with some footage of the falls once you get there. We have uploaded the video to the River Current website. Take a look.
