In the fourth grade classrooms of teachers Stacey Kelley and Belinda Feller, students are into a new fashion, wearing their vocabulary words.

The teachers explained, “The students are given a vocabulary word every Monday, then each day throughout the week they wear the word like a nametag when they can prove they know all about it.”

Students have been so excited about using their new vocabulary words, they’ve begun learning those of their friends too. Other students and staff have been quizzing the kids, and the community is invited to get involved, too. So, if you see a student wearing a vocabulary word, ask them any of these questions:

Can you spell your word without looking?

What does your word mean?

What is the part of speech?

Use your word in a sentence.

Kelley proudly says, “Since the onset of this program our fourth graders are daily using words like incorrigible, benevolent and infallible.”

Feller said her students are also noticing synonyms and antonyms for the words as they come across them in their reading.

This innovative program has not only given new knowledge to all of the participating students, but a contagious excitement for the educational process as well.
